BBMP warns pubs over smoking zones

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued notices to over 200 pubs, bars, and hotels in the city for failing to set up designated smoking zones. Establishments have been warned that if they do not comply within a week, their trade licenses will be revoked.

The civic body has taken this step to ensure compliance with public health regulations and to maintain smoke-free environments in public spaces. BBMP has directed that all establishments with more than 20 seating capacity must construct separate, well-ventilated smoking zones as per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) norms.

Officials stated that despite repeated reminders, many popular outlets in BBMP’s eight zones have failed to adhere to these mandatory norms, prompting this round of legal notices. The drive comes in the wake of rising complaints from patrons and citizens about secondhand smoke in public hospitality areas. BBMP has clarified that smoking areas must be physically separated from the non-smoking sections and must not serve food or beverages. Additionally, clear signage and proper disposal units must be installed within these zones.

A senior BBMP health officer said, “Our goal is not to shut down businesses but to protect public health. However, if the rules are not followed, strict action will be taken.” The civic body has urged all commercial establishments to act promptly, reminding them that public safety and legal compliance are non-negotiable. Further inspections are expected in the coming days to assess progress.
