Following the tragic fire incident at the Mudpipe Cafe in Koramangala, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a comprehensive inspection of pubs, bars, and restaurants throughout the city. Officials are enforcing regulations, particularly addressing venues operating rooftop pubs, which violate municipal rules. BBMP's Chief Health Officer, A.S. Balasundar, emphasized that according to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, operating a restaurant or pub on terraces is strictly prohibited. Despite this regulation, certain establishments have been flouting these guidelines, resulting in violations of their business licenses. Consequently, non-compliant pubs operating on terraces are being instructed to cease their operations. While the verification process is ongoing, a comprehensive report detailing the violators is yet to be compiled. This enforcement has created concerns for the proprietors of rooftop pubs. A restaurant owner in the city expressed frustration, citing compliance with various rules and regulations. They stated that while they primarily adhere to the guidelines, a few chairs and tables are placed on the terrace due to limited space on the ground floor. However, authorities have advised against using the terrace, prompting challenges for accommodating patrons. In the wake of the Mudpipe incident, BBMP is taking stringent measures to ensure fire safety compliance among all pubs, hotels, and restaurants under its jurisdiction. Regular monitoring and reviews are being conducted to guarantee adherence to safety norms. Notices are being issued to establishments found in violation, resulting in the closure of some pubs and restaurants. Stringent criteria regarding cleanliness in kitchens and adherence to safety protocols have been emphasized. Balasunder highlighted that as of October 28, 49 shops and establishments have faced closure due to non-compliance with the specified regulations. This proactive approach is aimed at enhancing safety standards and ensuring that such establishments adhere strictly to municipal guidelines and safety measures.
