Following the tragic death of a woman due to a wall collapse in the Whitefield-Channasandra area, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family.
The incident occurred amidst heavy rains that battered Bengaluru, leading to widespread waterlogging and structural damages. At a press conference, Maheshwar Rao stated, “Bengaluru received its heaviest rainfall in the last decade. When there is such a large volume of rain, minor and major problems inevitably arise.” In another rain-related incident, a rescue call was received around 7:08 am at RR Nagar under the Jnanabharathi Fire Station. A wall collapsed in Ideal Homes Layout, resulting in the death of five buffaloes and one cow.
Rao assured that BBMP teams have been working round the clock across the city. “We have identified 206 sensitive areas and have already begun providing relief in many of them,” he said. He emphasized the need for permanent solutions in two or three high-risk zones that have already been identified. The BBMP is working in coordination with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the fire department to address the immediate challenges posed by the downpour.
Referring to Sai Layout, Rao said, “We will expand the drainage system further, identify the exact source of water inflow, and seal it. Our immediate priority is to provide relief and restore normalcy for the affected residents.” BBMP’s response comes as the city grapples with rain-induced damage and rising public concerns.
