Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the welfare of farmers, small industries, and youth remains the government’s top priority as India moves closer to becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He was speaking at a rally in Varanasi after US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian goods starting August 7.
Trump also said India could face more penalties for buying oil from Russia. However, Indian government sources confirmed that oil imports from Russia continue. “India’s energy decisions depend on national interest and market conditions,” officials said.
PM Modi acknowledged global instability and said many countries are focusing only on their own benefit. “India must stay alert and protect its economic interests. We should focus on ‘swadeshi’—using locally made products,” he said.
He urged citizens to support Indian goods by being “vocal for local,” promoting self-reliance through Indian-made items. “Those who truly want India to become the third-largest economy must put aside differences and commit to buying only Indian-made products,” Modi said.
He reassured the public that the Indian economy remains strong and the government is working for its protection. The Prime Minister emphasized that national interests would be put first in all policies and actions.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that the India-US relationship remains stable and is built on shared values and interests, despite current trade tensions. “Our partnership has endured many challenges and will continue to grow,” an official said.
PM Modi concluded by asking people to support local farmers and small businesses to build a stronger and more self-reliant India.
