India’s popular digital payment system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), is set to introduce key changes starting August 1, 2025. These updates, based on new regulatory guidelines, aim to improve efficiency, reduce server load, and enhance security across platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
Here are five major rule changes UPI users should know:
Balance and Account View Limits
Users can now check their balance only 50 times and view linked accounts 25 times per day per app. This move targets background server traffic reduction.
UPI Autopay Time Restrictions
Recurring payments like EMIs and subscriptions will now be processed during off-peak hours—before 10 AM, between 1–5 PM, or after 9:30 PM. Users should adjust their settings accordingly.
Retry Limit for Failed Transactions
Users will get only three attempts to check the status of failed transactions, with a mandatory 90-second wait between retries to ease server load.
No GST on UPI Transactions
The government has clarified there will be no GST on UPI payments, regardless of the amount or type—peer-to-peer or merchant. UPI remains free for users.
Recipient Name Must Be Confirmed
To avoid fraud and errors, UPI apps will now always display the recipient’s full name before users confirm any transaction.
These upgrades reflect UPI’s growth and its readiness to handle rising usage securely and efficiently. Users are encouraged to update their apps and review settings to adapt smoothly to the changes.
