Semicon India scheme to create 85,000 jobs: Centre

Ahead of the Union Budget 2025-26, the Union Finance Ministry highlighted the government’s progress in boosting investments and employment through initiatives like the semiconductor program and the PLI scheme for electronics manufacturing.

The ‘Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem’ offers attractive incentives to companies involved in semiconductor packaging and designing. Launched in December 2021, the Semicon India Programme has made notable progress in enhancing India’s global position in the semiconductor industry. The government has approved five semiconductor projects and supported 16 semiconductor design companies, with investments estimated at Rs 1.52 lakh crore.

These efforts are expected to create around 25,000 direct advanced technology jobs and an additional 60,000 indirect jobs. India’s goal is to establish itself as a global semiconductor and display manufacturing hub.

Additionally, under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for electronics, India has achieved production worth Rs 6.14 lakh crore and exports of Rs 3.12 lakh crore. The initiative has also generated over 1.28 lakh direct jobs, strengthening India’s position as a leading global electronics manufacturer.

The Finance Ministry further emphasized that technologies in communications and broadband will play a vital role in realizing the vision of a developed India, further fueling the country’s economic growth and contribution to the global supply chain.
