The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued strict new rules to stop the illegal sale of radio equipment like walkie-talkies on e-commerce platforms. These rules aim to protect consumers and prevent interference with emergency and police communication systems.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs said the devices are often sold without clear legal information. Many listings do not mention that using such equipment might require a license under Indian laws. This misleads buyers into thinking the devices can be used freely.
The new 2025 guidelines were created after talks with the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was found that many sellers list walkie-talkies without frequency details or proper approvals.
Now, sellers must clearly mention the frequency range and include proof of regulatory approval. Only devices that operate on approved frequencies and follow rules will be allowed for sale. Products without these details must be removed from online platforms.
E-commerce companies must check whether listed items follow licensing and safety laws. They must also remove any misleading ads or false product descriptions. Equipment that works on restricted frequencies or lacks approval can no longer be sold.
Violators will face penalties under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. In the past, CCPA sent 13 notices covering nearly 17,000 illegal product listings. These were found to break rules by not showing proper frequency or license details.
The ministry said these platforms will be monitored closely. The guidelines ensure that only legal, safe, and approved radio equipment is available online, protecting both consumers and communication networks.
