The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has initiated an electronic campaign to address discrepancies between income and transactions reported in the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the financial years 2023-24 and 2021-22. This initiative also targets individuals who have significant high-value transactions or taxable income recorded in their AIS but have failed to file ITRs for these years, according to an official statement released on Tuesday. The campaign is part of the e-Verification Scheme, 2021, and involves sending SMS and email notifications to taxpayers and non-filers where mismatches have been identified. These messages aim to remind taxpayers to review their income disclosures and file revised or belated ITRs for FY 2023-24 before December 31, 2024. For FY 2021-22, updated ITRs can be filed by March 31, 2025. Taxpayers can provide their feedback or dispute AIS-reported information through the AIS portal, accessible on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website. The initiative underscores the department’s efforts to simplify compliance by leveraging third-party data and promoting voluntary tax disclosure. This move aligns with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat, fostering a transparent, accountable, and taxpayer-friendly system. The CBDT encourages all eligible taxpayers to fulfil their tax obligations and contribute to national economic development. The Income Tax Department’s technological interventions aim to streamline processes, ensure transparency, and nurture a culture of compliance while supporting India’s growth trajectory.
