Contractors Seek Urgent Action As BBMP Bill Delays Prompt Desperate Appeal For Euthanasia

Must read

In a distressing turn of events, approximately 500 contractors associated with the corporation have penned a poignant appeal to President Draupadi Murmu, seeking permission for euthanasia. This dire request follows a prolonged period of bill delays by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), despite the state government releasing Rs 675 crore to settle outstanding dues owed to the contractors. Addressing the media, K.T. Manjunath, President of the association, shed light on the alarming situation. Despite the BBMP’s substantial revenue sources, including a tax revenue of Rs 2,000 crores and a government grant of Rs 675 crores for the year 2023-24, the contractors’ payments for services rendered have remained outstanding for a staggering 26 months. The contractors, burdened by unpaid bills and debts, find themselves in dire straits. Several have resorted to submitting petitions to the President, pleading for euthanasia, Manjunath shared at a press conference. Adding to the tumultuous situation, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has allegedly been unresponsive to the contractors’ plight. Accusations of harassment, irresponsible remarks, and threats of investigations have further exacerbated the contractors’ predicament. In response, the contractors have united in a decision to suspend all ongoing projects starting Monday, as a sign of protest and desperation. Manjunath expressed deep frustration that despite the availability of funds within the BBMP, the timely release of payments remains elusive. In response to this ongoing crisis, the association is diligently collecting statements and video messages from affected contractors. The intention is to present these testimonials to the President, highlighting the dire consequences of the prolonged payment delays. The association’s President also issued a stern warning, indicating that if their demands for prompt payment are not met by the government, a formidable and resolute struggle will be launched.
