HUBLI

The much-debated issue of serious problems caused by decades-old heaps of garbage in twin cities is slowly heading towards a solution, as tenders have been called for the biomining project. If everything goes according to plan, the project is expected to start soon. With this, the twin cities are expected to get rid of legacy waste by the second half of 2024. Within sixteen months from the day work begins, the legacy waste is expected to be cleared.
A few months back, residents of areas surrounding the garbage yard   had staged a protest and had blocked the road, charging that the smoke and stench emerging from this place was causing serious health problems.
Waste collected by the civic body for the last 40 years has been dumped at the garbage yards near Kempageri on Karwar Road   and at Hosayellapur. HDMC came up with a plan to clear this legacy waste nearly two years ago.
After getting the nod from the government at different levels, HDMC has called for tenders to implement this project. The garbage yard is estimated to have 3.6 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste. The garbage yard in Dharwad has 1.2 lakh metric tonnes of waste. For several years, these heaps of waste have not just been an eyesore but have also posed health hazards and caused pollution. To clear the legacy waste, HDMC’s proposed project is estimated to cost Rs 30 crore. It has called separate tenders to clear the waste at Hubballi and Dharwad garbage yards. Santoshkumar Yarangali, official in SWM department of HDMC, said that June 26 is the last date for bidders to participate in the tender.
