The incident occurred at 7 am on the elevated road in Hebbal that connects the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to the city and vice versa. According to the city traffic police, the deceased was on his way to attend a private function in Yelahanka when the SUV hit him from behind on the flyover.
Although Nagaraj was immediately moved to a hospital, he was declared dead, the police said. Meanwhile, the SUV driver Kumar was arrested and charged under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigations are on, police said. Nagaraj’s death drew the ire of netizens. Many condemned the incident while some said cyclists should avoid flyovers and busy roads. Sudeep Singh said flyovers aren’t designed to accommodate cyclists. Sad to know of the death but unfortunately the flyover isn’t designed to accommodate cyclists, joggers or even pedestrians. We can call it a design flaw or a design which is only for high speed vehicles to reach the stretch up to airport. Better to be safe and avoid the stretch.
Netizen Kiran tweeted that the elevated road should have a speed limit. There should be a speed limit on the elevated airport flyover. The speed limit till Devanahalli airport should be 70-80. Lord Shankar, who identified himself as a Human Resource (HR) professional.
