The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has welcomed the inauguration of an insulated, all-year-round indoor Air Rifle and Air Pistol shooting range at the built Sports Complex of the Ladakh Police in Leh, calling it a step towards developing shooting sport in the Union Territory.
The facility, established by the Ladakh Shooting Association (LSA) in collaboration with the Ladakh Police, was inaugurated in August by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena. Senior officials and sporting representatives, including Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, DGP Anant Jain, NRAI Vice President K. Sultan Singh and LSA President Gawa Norboo, attended the ceremony.
The new range is expected to strengthen Ladakh’s sporting infrastructure by allowing athletes to train indoors throughout the year despite the region’s challenging weather conditions. It will be accessible to students, members of the public and police personnel, widening participation and creating opportunities to identify promising local shooters.
NRAI President Kalikesh Singh Deo said the facility would help take shooting to the grassroots and provide young athletes with a pathway towards competitive sport. NRAI Secretary General Pawankumar Singh also described access as fundamental to building a sustainable sporting ecosystem.
The Lieutenant Governor welcomed the initiative and stressed the importance of year-round sporting facilities. He also announced UT Government support for developing additional shooting ranges in other districts and locations across Ladakh.
The NRAI said continued cooperation among the UT Government, Ladakh Police and LSA could help turn the new facility into a shooting ecosystem and produce more shooters from the region.
