The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating the August 4 Air India Phuket-Delhi flight incident, with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu saying a preliminary report is expected soon.
Air India Flight AI 2379, carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members, suddenly lost 300 feet while cruising at 36,000 feet during its journey to Delhi. At least 20 passengers and four crew members were injured, along with four crew members, bringing the reported total to 24. Two crew members suffered spinal injuries near the tailbone and neck, according to Naidu.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the minister said the AAIB investigation was underway and that the government would decide the further course of action after the report is released. He said the government has also asked the investigative agency to expedite its probe so that more stringent laws can be considered and exemplary punishment imposed to prevent similar incidents.
The AAIB is examining technical, operational, medical and human-factor evidence connected with the flight. The investigation assumes added significance after the pilot reportedly tested positive for psychoactive substances during post-flight screening in Delhi. A subsequent test also returned positive, reportedly confirming marijuana use.
Naidu said the government engages with airlines every month to discuss operational difficulties and challenges. He said airlines have been encouraged to strengthen their operations, particularly their financial systems, and have assured the government that improvements would be made soon.
Findings will guide accountability and safeguards. The final report is expected to shape regulatory and safety measures.
