Talabira II & III Open Cast Coal Mine in Odisha has achieved record production and dispatch in the 2025-26 financial year, reinforcing the Centre’s push to increase domestic coal availability and strengthen energy security.
Allocated to NLC India Ltd. on May 2, 2016, under the Nominated Authority framework, the mine produced 19.14 million tonnes (MT) of coal and dispatched 17.69 MT during FY26, according to the Ministry of Coal.
The mine, spread across Sambalpur and Jharsuguda districts, recorded year-on-year production growth of 11.28 per cent. It also achieved its highest-ever daily output of 126,138.07 tonnes on March 21, 2026, while monthly production touched a record 3.39 MT in March.
Talabira II & III supplies coal to power-generating facilities across several states, including NTPC Darlipali, NTPC Gadarwara, NTPC Khargone and NTPC Kudgi. Its output also supports power plants in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Since beginning production, the mine has maintained a sustained growth trajectory, with cumulative production reaching 72.23 MT and cumulative dispatch standing at 70.89 MT as of August 14, 2026.
The ministry said technology has played a key role in improving operational efficiency. The Digital Logistics Management System uses RFID-based vehicle verification, AI-enabled cameras and technology-enabled entry and exit gates to monitor coal movement.
Following DLMS implementation, average vehicle entry-gate processing time fell from 1.42 minutes to 0.54 minutes, while tare weighment time declined from 1.34 minutes to 0.48 minutes, improving the mine’s logistics efficiency and overall dispatch efficiency.
