KSPCB regulatory scandal: Fake certificates under investigation

After marathon meetings, BBMP rejigs garbage collection rules in Bengaluru

A major regulatory scandal has emerged in Karnataka as the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board ordered a formal departmental inquiry against 4 senior officials for allegedly issuing fraudulent plastic recycling certificates.

The investigation centers on Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, which require plastic manufacturing companies to responsibly recycle post-consumer waste. According to audit findings by environment departments and central pollution monitoring bodies, several commercial recycling units were caught generating false compliance documents. These certificates falsely claimed that large quantities of plastic waste had been processed and recycled without any actual industrial recycling taking place.

The accused officials are facing severe disciplinary action for allegedly bypassing mandatory verification rules and approving these fraudulent certificates for corporate entities in exchange for financial gains. This multi-crore malpractice allowed manufacturing companies to bypass environmental obligations illegally, sparking widespread outrage among local citizens, consumer advocates, and environmentalists.

In response to the growing crisis, the pollution control board has intensified its crackdown across the state. Authorities have announced plans to cancel the operating licenses of commercial recycling units involved in fabricating records and impose heavy financial penalties. The strict administrative steps aim to restore transparency in environmental governance and crack down on syndicates exploiting sustainability protocols.
