Ocean Growth Summit
Thiruvananthapuram
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said Kerala’s future is closely linked to the seas, as the state hosted the first Kerala-European Union (EU) Blue Economy Conclave at Kovalam. Calling the state a “bridge between India and Europe,” he stressed Kerala’s role in building a sustainable and equitable ocean-based economy. Vijayan will formally inaugurate the conclave on Friday, though discussions began on Thursday.
The two-day event has brought together senior leaders from Kerala, the Indian government, and the EU to explore new paths for ocean-based growth. EU Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Herve Delphin, described the conclave as a “collaborative platform” that can help accelerate India’s blue economy with European expertise and investment. He highlighted Kerala’s unique potential in maritime activities, wellness, and tourism.
State Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian, who worked to ensure broad EU participation, said the event underlines Kerala’s commitment to sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and coastal resilience. He stressed that cooperation with the EU and central government would create opportunities for coastal communities while protecting marine ecosystems.
A “Team Europe” delegation of ambassadors and diplomats from 17 EU countries is attending, representing nations including Belgium, Italy, Spain, Germany, and France. Union ministers and secretaries are also present, reflecting strong national support.
Kerala’s 600 km coastline, inland waters, and rich biodiversity make it central to India’s blue economy strategy. For the EU, the blue economy employed 4.5 million people and generated £890 billion in turnover in 2022.
The conclave will focus on sustainable aquaculture, harbour modernization, shipping investments, renewable energy, coastal tourism, skill development, and climate-resilient growth through policy dialogues, expert panels, and networking sessions.
