Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the long-pending multi-sport complex under the Smart City project in Hubballi-Dharwad is nearing completion and will be inaugurated soon.
Addressing a press conference in Hubballi, Joshi said that nearly 98 per cent of the construction work of the sports facility has already been completed, while around 91 per cent of the financial work has also been executed. He added that the remaining works should be completed by 2028 as part of the broader development roadmap.
The multi-sport centre, being developed under the Smart City initiative, has been taken up at an estimated cost of around Rs 175 crore. The facility is designed to support multiple sports disciplines and enable simultaneous sporting activities at a single venue.
Joshi described the project as an ambitious initiative aimed at boosting sports infrastructure in the region. He urged the state government to expedite the remaining work and ensure early operational readiness of the complex.
He also suggested that the maintenance and operational management of the facility should be handed over to a sports body or a non-governmental organisation to ensure efficient upkeep and long-term sustainability.
The minister noted that no official date has been fixed for the inauguration, but indicated that the facility would be opened once all pending works are completed.
The project is part of a broader set of urban development works under the Smart City programme in Hubballi-Dharwad, which aims to modernise infrastructure and improve public amenities in the twin cities.
Officials said the sports complex is expected to provide a significant boost to local athletes and create opportunities for hosting regional and national-level sporting events once fully operational.
