CM says women police personnel will be given priority in postings within their home districts to help them balance professional and personal responsibilities
Kolkata
The West Bengal government on Saturday dissolved the Police Welfare Board Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said.
The decision was taken after an administrative review meeting held at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district. He said attacks on police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances and strict law enforcement will continue.
The chief minister said the Police Welfare Board had been created with good intentions but later became politicised. He said some people allegedly used it for personal benefits including illegal extensions of service. The government has now decided to abolish the board and strengthen transparent police welfare systems instead.
Adhikari also announced that women police personnel will get priority postings in their home districts. This move aims to help them balance professional duties and personal responsibilities more effectively. He also instructed police to remain alert against infiltration through riverine borders with Bangladesh.
Officials were asked to strengthen surveillance in vulnerable border areas and improve coordination. The chief minister reiterated his government’s stand against extortion and illegal collections from transport operators. He urged citizens to report complaints of corruption so that action can be taken quickly. The meeting reviewed policing and administrative issues across districts with senior officers joining virtually.
Officials said the reforms are aimed at improving discipline, accountability, and public safety across West Bengal. Authorities added that further steps will focus on modernising police welfare systems ensuring transparency strengthening border security and maintaining strict action against crime while also improving working conditions for personnel across the state to enhance efficiency trust and public confidence in law enforcement institutions going forward under new administration.
