In a bid to improve pedestrian safety and ensure smoother foot traffic, the Bengaluru East City Corporation continued its footpath encroachment removal drive on Tuesday, targeting Sarjapur Road, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. The operation involved the removal of unauthorized stalls, roadside structures, and other obstacles that had been restricting movement on the sidewalks, posing a hazard to pedestrians.
Officials from the East City Corporation, along with a dedicated enforcement team, monitored the clearance operation to ensure minimal disruption to daily commuters while maintaining strict adherence to municipal regulations. The drive is part of a broader citywide initiative to reclaim public spaces and restore them for citizen use, enhancing safety and accessibility for everyone, including schoolchildren, office-goers, and senior citizens.
Local residents and commuters lauded the initiative, noting that previously congested footpaths often forced pedestrians onto the road, increasing the risk of accidents. “It’s a welcome step,” said one resident, “especially during peak hours when walking along Sarjapur Road was nearly impossible due to encroachments.”
The Corporation has assured that the clearance drive will continue in phases across other busy city roads, with strict monitoring to prevent the recurrence of encroachments. Officials also highlighted that alongside physical removal, awareness campaigns will educate shopkeepers and the public about maintaining clear footpaths to ensure sustained compliance.
The ongoing drive reflects the city administration’s commitment to creating safer, pedestrian-friendly spaces and enhancing the overall quality of urban life in Bengaluru.
