Ram Gopal Varma Calls OTT Versus Cinema Halls Debate Dumb

Must read

Movies got shrunk into television screens during the pandemic in the last two years and home projection systems and the digital boom led to the mushrooming and flourishing of numerous OTT platforms. The OTT versus cinema halls is still a heated debate among all and the popularity of digital platforms has compelled the world to believe that Over-the-top platforms are the future.

However, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma wants to see it differently. In a recent tweet, the ace filmmaker termed the OTT vs theatres argument dumb and justifying his views came up with an example of the food and nightclubs industry.

Reacting to the continuing debate, Ram Gopal Varma tweeted on Sunday, The argument about people not coming to theatres because of OTTs is as dumb as saying, because you can get food at your home, and nobody will come to hotels and restaurants. While many agreed to what the filmmaker wanted to say and insisted that theatres will never die and will handle this crisis as they sailed through previously, there were some who pointed out the holes in RGVs theory.

Gone are the days when one would wait for months after a movie released, to watch it at home. Ever since cinema halls reopened in November last year, the window of releasing films on digital platforms was cut short from eight to four weeks. However, this led to debates on how the OTT release affects the theatrical business of feature films. Hence, multiplex associations and exhibitors have now announced that from August 1 onwards, there will once again be an eight-week window between the theatrical and OTT release of films.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ram Gopal Varmas latest release Ladki, a martial arts film with a female protagonist, failed to impress the audience. The film stars starring debutante Pooja Bhalekar.
