Klaasen focuses on wins over high strike-rates

NEW DELHI

Sunrisers Hyderabad star Heinrich Klaasen has revealed a major shift in his batting philosophy during the 2026 IPL season. The powerful right-hander, known for his aggressive hitting, says he has stopped trying to score at a “300 strike-rate” every time he bats, choosing instead to focus on winning games for his team.

Klaasen’s new approach is paying off handsomely. Following his composed 69 off 43 balls in a 33-run win against Punjab Kings, he has surged to the top of the Orange Cap standings. He currently leads the tournament with 494 runs at a steady average of nearly 55. “I’m playing the situation in front of me,” Klaasen explained, noting that having teammates like Nitish Kumar Reddy in top form takes the pressure off him to take unnecessary risks.

While fans have urged him to reconsider his international retirement before the 2027 World Cup, Klaasen remains firm in his decision. He stated that he has “made his peace” with leaving the Proteas, enjoying the extra time he now gets to spend with his family in South Africa. He admitted to a brief moment of “FOMO” (fear of missing out) while watching his friends succeed, but ultimately feels he has started a better chapter in his life.

With the Sunrisers currently sitting at the top of the table, Klaasen is focused on securing a strong playoff spot. The team now travels to Ahmedabad for a high-stakes clash against the Gujarat Titans on May 12. For Klaasen, the individual records are secondary to the ultimate goal of bringing the trophy back to Hyderabad.
