Vandse
Rising accidents on the Vandse–Kollur state highway in coastal Karnataka have triggered safety concerns, with residents demanding urgent road safety measures including speed breakers.
The stretch has seen increased traffic in recent weeks following restrictions on the Hulikal Ghat route, leading to heavy vehicle movement through Vandse. Locals say the narrow and winding road is now under severe pressure, with speeding vehicles worsening the risk of accidents.
In the past month, at least three accidents have been reported on the route, resulting in two fatalities. In one incident, a woman walking along the roadside was killed after being hit by a car, highlighting growing concerns about pedestrian safety.
The highway is also a key route for pilgrims travelling to Kollur and Maranakatte, further increasing traffic density throughout the day. Residents say pedestrians, including schoolchildren, now find it unsafe to walk or cross the road.
People in the area have repeatedly demanded installation of speed breakers at accident-prone points, particularly near the auto stand and school zones. However, they allege that despite discussions in gram sabha meetings, no concrete action has been taken so far.
Udaykumar Shetty has urged the district administration and police to take immediate steps to improve road safety and prevent further loss of lives.
Locals are now pressing for urgent intervention, including traffic calming measures, enforcement of speed limits, and better monitoring of heavy vehicles using the route.
