India has reaffirmed its policy of suspending bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan while continuing to permit participation in international multi-nation events involving the neighbouring country, the government said in an official communication on Wednesday.
The directive, issued by the Sports Ministry to key bodies including the Indian Olympic Association and the Sports Authority of India, reiterates that no bilateral series — across cricket, hockey or other disciplines — will take place between India and Pakistan in either nation.
“In so far as bilateral sporting engagements are concerned, Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to play in India,” the ministry stated, underlining that the existing restrictions remain unchanged.
However, the government clarified that India will continue to adhere to international sporting norms, allowing both nations to compete in global and continental tournaments. This means Indian athletes can participate in events featuring Pakistan abroad, while Pakistani athletes will be allowed entry for competitions hosted in India under multilateral frameworks.
The policy aligns with the principles of the International Olympic Committee and other global sports bodies, which emphasise inclusivity and non-discrimination in international competitions.
The clarification comes as India intensifies efforts to position itself as a major host of global sporting events, including bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics. To support this ambition, the ministry announced measures to simplify visa procedures for athletes, officials and administrators from across the world.
Multi-entry visas for international sports officials will be prioritised, with validity extending up to five years, subject to tenure. The government also assured continued protocol support and official courtesies for visiting delegations.
The current stance traces back to earlier decisions taken after heightened tensions between the two countries, when India emphasised that bilateral sporting ties would remain suspended while multilateral commitments would be honoured.
By maintaining this balanced approach, India aims to uphold international sporting obligations without altering its broader diplomatic position, ensuring athletes are not deprived of competitive opportunities on the global stage.
