Two Sri Lankan Under-19 cricketers were arrested for filming women at a hotel, adding to the turmoil facing the newly formed SLC Transformation Committee.
COLOMBO
Two members of the Sri Lankan Under-19 cricket team have been arrested following shocking allegations of voyeurism at a hotel in Narahenpita. The teenagers are accused of using mobile phones to film women in their bathrooms, a scandal that has sent ripples through the nation’s sporting community.
The arrests were made earlier this week after several women staying at the hotel filed official complaints. Local police are now working to determine if any of the recorded footage was shared on social media or other online platforms. After appearing at the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court, the players were released on a personal bail of approximately $1,564 each. They are scheduled to return for a second hearing on May 25.
This controversy hits at a time of total chaos for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The entire leadership board, including former president Shammi Silva, resigned this week under government pressure. To fix the broken system, a new “Transformation Committee” has been formed. This panel includes legendary cricketers like Kumar Sangakkara and Roshan Mahanama, alongside legal and corporate experts.
While the new committee works to rebuild the board’s reputation, they now face the immediate challenge of addressing this criminal investigation. So far, SLC has not announced specific disciplinary actions against the two youth players. However, with legends like Sangakkara now at the helm, fans are expecting a firm response to ensure that such behavior is never tolerated in the gentleman’s game again.
