A cultural programme titled “Rajrasa” was organised in Bidar to mark the 97th birth anniversary of legendary actor Dr Rajkumar, celebrating his contribution to cinema, music, and society.
The event was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivanand Karale, who described Dr Rajkumar as a multi-faceted personality—an acclaimed actor, accomplished singer, and respected social contributor. The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, Department of Information and Public Relations, and Karnataka Sahitya Sangha.
Karale highlighted Rajkumar’s significant role in the Gokak agitation, stating that his support strengthened the movement for the preservation of the Kannada language. He also noted that Rajkumar gained national recognition in music and received several prestigious awards during his lifetime.
Delivering a special lecture, Jagannath Hebbale said Dr Rajkumar was not only a legendary actor known for mythological and social films but also a reformer who contributed to societal upliftment. He added that his efforts in protecting Kannada language and culture remain exemplary.
Dr Basavaraj Ballur of Karnataka Pre-University College said Rajkumar used cinema as a medium to address social inequalities and inspire positive change. He also emphasized his active participation in cultural movements such as the Gokak agitation, describing his simplicity, values, and social responsibility as an inspiration for the younger generation.
The programme witnessed participation from officials and cultural personalities including Manjunath Sullolli, Malappa Adasare, Vijaykumar Sonare, Tanveer Itbal, Vijayakrishna Solapur, Ashish Hajjare, and Geetabai. The event concluded with musical performances celebrating Rajkumar’s legacy in Kannada arts and culture.
