In the past two years, the pandemic forced multiple films to change their course and opt for a digital platform instead of the ideal theatrical release. One of the first stars to make this successful transition was Vidya Balan, whose Shakuntala Devi had released in July 2020, during the peak phase of the COVID-19 lockdown. After winning hosannas for her second OTT release, Sherni, Vidya is now gearing up for her third consecutive OTT release Jalsa.
A source close to the production house associated with Jalsa revealed to Media, “Vidya is excited about Jalsa. During 2020, Shakuntala Devi was one of the first films to hit OTT and it had a successful run. Vidya then followed it up with Sherni, where she played a wildlife conservationist and that outing got great feedback, too. Jalsa is a continuation of the same phase in Vidya’s career and its an all-new trend that she’s pioneering, the same way she did a few years ago when she championed and led the cause of women-oriented films and lead characters.”
With Jalsa, Vidya reunites with director Suresh Triveni who she had worked with in Tumhari Sulu. She’s also teaming up with co-star Shefali Shah in what promises to be a casting coup of sorts. The movie also features Rohini Hattangadi and Iqbal Khan in key roles.
