Kalburgi
Parents of SSLC students in Kalaburagi have urged the Karnataka government to withdraw the recently introduced grading system for the Hindi language, expressing concern over its impact on students in the Kalyana Karnataka region. Addressing a press conference, parents stated that Hindi has historically been a major medium of communication in the region since the Nizam era. They pointed out that proficiency in Hindi has helped many people from Kalyana Karnataka secure jobs in various states across the country.
Among the six subjects in SSLC, Hindi is considered one of the easiest for students to understand, read, and write after Kannada. Parents noted that students often score higher marks in Hindi compared to other subjects, and the new grading system could affect their overall performance.
They also highlighted regional differences, stating that while students from Mysuru and Kodagu regions may find Hindi challenging, students in Kalyana Karnataka rely on it for better scoring opportunities. “Children here tend to score lower in other languages but perform well in Hindi,” they said.
Raising another concern, parents pointed out that for Urdu-medium students, Kannada effectively becomes a third language. They questioned how Kannada could be graded similarly under such circumstances. SDMC President Amit Hamza of Ijeri and representatives of the Hindi School Teachers’ Association, including Chanabasappa Biradar, supported the demand and urged the government to reconsider its decision.
