Farmer leaders demanded year-round MSP-based procurement centers for all major crops to prevent exploitation by private traders
YADGIR
Farmers in Yadgir staged a protest by blocking the road near the Agricultural Produce Market (APMC) Ganj, demanding fair prices for their crops. The protest was organized by the Karnataka State Farmers’ Association and Raitha Sene.
Farmer leaders called for year-round procurement centers for all major crops, including cotton, togari, uddu, neem, paddy, peanut, sajje, and jowar, at the minimum support price (MSP) fixed by the central government. They argued that continuous procurement would help farmers avoid exploitation by private traders.
This year, heavy rains led to a poor peanut crop yield, and falling market prices have added to farmers’ hardships. Protesters demanded that the peanut price be fixed at a minimum of Rs 12,000 per quintal to protect their livelihoods.
Farmers emphasized that fair pricing for all crops is only possible if procurement centers operate throughout the year according to MSP rates.
Several prominent farmers joined the demonstration, including State Vice President Laxmikant A. Patil Maddaraki, District President Mahaveer Lingeri, Tayappa Naglapura, Srikanth Kumbara, and Mallikarjuna Honagera.
The protest caused temporary disruption of traffic near the market but highlighted the growing concern among local farmers over unstable crop prices and the need for government intervention to safeguard their earnings. Authorities monitored the situation, urging calm while listening to farmers’ demands.
