Assam CM Slams Cong Over Neglect of Assam Movement Martyrs

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress of neglecting Assam Movement martyrs while asserting historic injustice corrected.

Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Indian National Congress, accusing the party of denying due honour to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement for decades. Addressing the issue with strong words, Sarma said those who laid down their lives for Aai Asomi and fought to protect Assam’s identity, land and rights were systematically ignored by successive Congress-led governments. According to him, the sacrifice of these martyrs formed the backbone of modern Assam’s political and social consciousness, yet they were deprived of the dignity and recognition they rightfully deserved.

The Chief Minister asserted that the present government has corrected this long-standing historical injustice by formally recognising and institutionalising the legacy of the movement’s heroes. He reiterated that remembrance of the Assam Movement should go beyond symbolic gestures, stressing that true respect lies in acknowledging the sacrifices that reshaped the state’s future. They made the ultimate sacrifice for Assam, but they were forgotten for years. That chapter is now being restored with honour, Sarma said.

Highlighting the significance of the newly unveiled Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, Sarma described the memorial as a landmark moment in Assam’s history. He said the grand structure stands as a permanent symbol of gratitude from both the people and the state, marking a decisive shift in how the martyrs of the Assam Movement are remembered officially.

The occasion, Sarma noted, gained national importance with Narendra Modi paying tributes at the memorial. He termed the Prime Minister’s homage as a powerful signal that the martyrs of Assam are not only regional heroes but belong to the entire nation. It was a moment of national acknowledgement, and it sent a clear message that Assam’s sacrifices are India’s sacrifices, he said.
