Tamil Nadu extends EV tax relief till 2027

Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to continue the full motor vehicle tax exemption for battery-operated vehicles until December 2027, giving a fresh boost to electric vehicle adoption in the state. Industries Minister T R B Rajaa announced the move for sharing the official government notification.

The decision, taken under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974, extends the existing 100 per cent tax exemption for both transport and non-transport electric vehicles. The new exemption period will begin on January 1, 2026, and remain in force until December 31, 2027.

Minister Rajaa said the move reflects Chief Minister M K Stalin’s commitment to promoting clean mobility, affordability, and large-scale electric vehicle manufacturing. He described the policy as pro-industry and supportive of long-term growth in the EV sector.

According to the minister, electric vehicle adoption in Tamil Nadu reached around 7.8 per cent in 2025. While this marks steady progress, he noted that significant work remains, especially in expanding charging infrastructure and making the overall supply chain more environmentally friendly.

The tax exemption is expected to lower ownership costs for consumers while providing stability and confidence for manufacturers planning long-term investments. Rajaa pointed out that the decision sends a clear and stable policy signal at a time when global markets are facing uncertainty and clean mobility investments are under pressure.

In a social media post, he said Tamil Nadu’s continued focus on sustainability aligns with its efforts to position itself as a leading destination for electric vehicle manufacturing and innovation.

The official notification issued by the state government confirms that all battery-operated vehicles will remain exempt from motor vehicle tax during the extended period. The move is likely to further encourage buyers, support industry expansion, and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s role in India’s transition to cleaner transportation in the coming years.
