Minority Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan announced that tenders have been floated to upgrade essential facilities—including beds, mattresses and other basic amenities—in hostels functioning under the Minority Welfare Department across Karnataka. Responding to a question raised by Congress member Balkees Banu during the Legislative Council session, he said the state currently operates 405 minority student hostels, some of which require urgent improvements.
He acknowledged that several hostels are facing staff shortages, a matter already brought to the government’s notice. To address this, the department is reviewing the 2011 service and recruitment rules of the Directorate of Minorities. Once this revision is completed, the government will initiate the process to fill vacant posts, including hostel warden positions, he assured.
For now, to ensure smooth hostel functioning, student safety, and academic support, the department has temporarily assigned additional responsibilities to existing staff members to manage vacant warden roles. This arrangement, he noted, is only an interim solution until the revised staffing rules allow fresh recruitment.
Khan emphasised that the government is committed to strengthening minority hostels and ensuring that students receive safe accommodation and necessary infrastructure to pursue their education without hardship.
