Chaudhary said the government aims to deter illegal trade, praising DRI’s role since 1957 in protecting economic borders amid challenges, shifts, and organized crime networks
NEW DELHI
The government has reiterated its commitment to creating a business environment where honest taxpayers can work with dignity and without fear. Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, made this statement during the 68th Founding Day celebrations of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) held in the capital on Thursday.
Chaudhary said the government is determined to make illegal trade through India’s land, waterways, or air risky, difficult, and ultimately futile. He praised DRI for its crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s economic borders since its formation in 1957. According to him, DRI’s dedication has helped the country stay strong in the face of new global challenges, technological changes, and the rise of organised international crime networks.
CBIC Chairman Vivek Chaturvedi also appreciated DRI’s professionalism and its importance in supporting fair and legitimate trade across the country. He urged officers to continue using technology, risk-management tools, and international cooperation to further strengthen border security.
Abhai Kumar Srivastav, Director General of DRI, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to the highest ethical standards. He highlighted how DRI teams continue to bust smuggling rackets and stop the flow of illegal funds, which could be used by anti-national groups or criminal organisations.
During the event, DRI released its annual ‘Smuggling in India Report 2024–25’, which provides insights into smuggling trends, major achievements, upcoming challenges, and suggested policy changes.
The ceremony also saw participation from 30 international delegates from 15 countries attending the 10th Regional Customs Enforcement Meeting, highlighting India’s growing collaboration with global enforcement partners in the fight against cross-border crime.
