Disposal of plastic waste has become a significant challenge for local bodies across the state and nation. In response, the Tadibidi Gram Panchayat in Wadegera taluk has launched an innovative initiative that rewards villagers with one kilogram of sugar for every kilogram of plastic waste they bring in.

Since its inception in July, the program has expanded from an initial distribution of 30 kilograms of sugar to 82 kilograms, effectively preventing that amount of plastic from being irresponsibly discarded. The panchayat plans to send the collected waste to a recycling unit, using the funds generated to purchase sugar.

Panchayat Development Officer Govind Rathod noted that stray and domestic cattle previously consumed discarded plastic bags, leading to concerns about improper waste disposal. Following a suggestion from Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Mallikarjun Sangawar, the sugar-for-plastic initiative was launched. Once the total collected weight reaches a quintal, it will be transported to a recycling facility, with any additional costs covered by GP funds.

Tadibidi GP President Umareddy stated that the program focuses on collecting items like water bottles, shampoo bottles, carry bags, and teacups, while heavier items like plastic pipes and pots are excluded. After conducting awareness programs in Tadibidi and Hondekal, the panchayat has encouraged community participation, resulting in residents voluntarily storing and bringing plastic waste to the GP.
