Three more people were arrested in connection with the September 8 stone-pelting incident at a Ganesh pandal in Surat’s Sayedpura, Gujarat, bringing the total arrests to 33, police said on Tuesday. Six minors were also detained. The recent arrests were made using CCTV footage.
The incident took place during the Ganeshotsav festival when a mob attacked the police, injuring five officers, including one senior official. As the situation escalated, senior police officers rushed to the scene, but the violence continued, resulting in further injuries.
That night, police arrested 27 suspects through a combing operation, though all have since been released on bail. Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited the site, and the Central government is monitoring the case. A mob of 200-300 people also protested at the local police station, leading to further violence. Police responded with tear gas and lathi charges, and cases of rioting and vandalism were filed.
