Following Farooq Abdullah’s recent remarks on the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley, many in the displaced community are calling for the National Conference (NC) to acknowledge the 1990 exodus and apologize for the violence that accompanied it. Abdullah, who heads a coalition government with Congress, expressed his hope for the return of Pandits who were forced to flee during that turbulent time. He stated, “The time has come,” for their return.
However, skepticism remains among Kashmiri Pandits regarding Abdullah’s sincerity. One community member emphasized the need for genuine commitment, warning that any lingering views from the 1980s and 1990s would be seen as a betrayal. Many accuse the NC and Congress of playing a role in their displacement and are calling for an investigative committee to clarify the circumstances surrounding their exodus.
Another member stressed that promises alone are not enough; what’s needed are concrete policies and a clear roadmap for their safe return. Community members are urging Abdullah to engage with them directly to develop a solid plan that ensures their safety and rights, as they remain cautious about returning without assurances.
