During the inauguration of the India Mobile Congress 2024 on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for global standards in artificial intelligence (AI) and data privacy. In his speech, he urged industry leaders, tech innovators, and startups to collaborate on establishing these standards.
Modi stated, ‘We must create global standards for ethical AI and data privacy that acknowledge the diversity of nations.’ He compared the situation to existing global rules in aviation, highlighting the necessity for a similar framework in the digital sector. ‘Just as we have guidelines for aviation, the digital realm requires its own set of regulations,’ he added.
The Prime Minister called on the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) to spearhead efforts in developing global standards that ensure ethical AI and data privacy, respecting the unique needs of various countries. ‘Telecommunications must be made safe for all. In our interconnected world, security should be a priority,’ he noted, referencing India’s Data Protection Act and National Cyber Security Strategy as evidence of the country’s commitment to a secure digital environment.
Modi reiterated India’s push for these issues during its G-20 presidency last year, stressing that global institutions must recognize the importance of digital technology governance. He concluded by urging international cooperation, stating, ‘No nation can tackle cyber threats alone; we must work together and take collective responsibility.’
