Maha Kumbh 2025: 250 reunited amid Sangam crowds
Mahakumbh
On the first day of Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, over 250 individuals separated from their families were reunited through the efforts of the fair administration, officials said. The event began with the Paush Purnima bathing festival, drawing millions to the sacred Sangam for a holy dip. The Mela, running until February 26, is expected to attract 40–45 crore visitors.
To manage the massive crowds, the Uttar Pradesh government set up ‘Bhula-Bhatka’ camps, Lost and Found (Khoya-Paya) centres, and police assistance booths. Loudspeakers announce missing persons’ names, while digital tools and social media aid in quick reunions. Personnel stationed at watchtowers and along the ghats assist pilgrims.
Nitesh Kumar Dwivedi of the Uttar Pradesh Civil Defence reported that around 200 to 250 people were reunited within the first hour. Ajay Goyal, a Delhi pilgrim, praised the system, saying the announcements helped him reunite with his family quickly.
However, challenges remain. Sujata Jha, separated from her 13-member family, shared her struggle of waiting in wet clothes for hours. Similarly, Omwati, an elderly woman, expressed distress after losing her companions.
Despite these incidents, the administration’s arrangements received widespread praise for their efficiency, ensuring smoother experiences for the millions attending the Maha Kumbh Mela.
