Australia has introduced a new Working Holiday Maker Visa, allowing up to 1,000 young Indians aged 18 to 30 to travel to Australia for work or study for up to 12 months. Assistant Minister for Immigration Matt Thistlethwaite announced the initiative during his visit to New Delhi on Monday, highlighting it as a significant step in strengthening ties between Australia and India.
Thistlethwaite expressed that this visa program symbolizes the growing partnership between the two nations and complements existing avenues for Indian students and skilled workers in Australia. He noted that young Indians would have the chance to immerse themselves in Australian culture while also working or studying.
“The ties between India and Australia are going from strength to strength,” Thistlethwaite remarked, referencing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous visit to Australia. He also mentioned the increasing popularity of Diwali celebrations in Australia, reflecting the growing Indian diaspora and cultural exchange.
The visa application process began on October 1, 2024, and already 40,000 young Indians have applied, indicating strong interest. The application window for the ballot will close on October 30, 2024, with successful candidates randomly selected to apply for the visa.
Thistlethwaite emphasized that the Working Holiday Maker Visa allows for employment in any industry, with many participants typically finding work in hospitality and agriculture. Additionally, applicants can pursue short courses to enhance their skills or improve their English.
