Governments worldwide have allocated nearly USD 2 trillion in direct investment for clean energy since 2020, according to a recent report. This amount is almost three times the investment made after the 2007-08 financial crisis. The report revealed that around 80 percent of the spending was concentrated in China, the European Union, and the United States.

Government support for clean energy technologies has increased significantly, with a focus on energy security following recent global crises. A growing area of investment is domestic manufacturing incentives for clean energy, which has accounted for about 10 percent of total government spending since 2020. The largest portions of these funds have been directed towards low-emission vehicles, hydrogen, and batteries.

At the consumer level, government support during the peak of the global energy crisis reached USD 940 billion. This increase in policy and financial backing for clean energy highlights the growing importance of these technologies in both reducing emissions and enhancing energy security.

Energy performance standards have also seen significant policy intervention, with 35 countries representing 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions introducing new regulations in 2023.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of global energy policies by country and sector, detailing major changes over the past year. Additionally, it includes a public Energy Policy Inventory, containing over 5,000 energy-related policies across various areas such as government spending, regulation, and trade.
