With recent cholera cases reported in the district, Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidyakumari has called on the public to prioritize cleanliness to help prevent further spread of the disease. During district-level meetings for the surveillance and dengue coordination committees, she noted that 11 cholera cases had emerged in the past week, with five cases linked to the Eedu Primary Health Center in Karkala, alongside confirmed cases of vomiting and diarrhea in Malpe, Shirva, Kaup, and Kemmannu.

Dr. Vidyakumari emphasized the importance of public awareness and urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. She advised thoroughly washing seafood before consumption and practicing proper hand hygiene, including washing hands with soap after using the toilet and before meals. Restaurants and hotels should serve hot drinking water and wash utensils with hot water. Additionally, she recommended avoiding roadside food and items sold from pushcarts.

Cholera is a serious infection caused by consuming contaminated food or water, leading to severe dehydration. Immediate medical attention is crucial for symptoms such as severe diarrhea and vomiting.

In discussing vector-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, Dr. Vidyakumari stressed the need to eliminate stagnant water around homes to prevent mosquito breeding.
