At the Paris Paralympics, Indian athlete Kanchan Lakhani narrowly missed a podium finish in the women’s discus throw – F53 event, placing seventh overall. Despite her best effort of 10.06 meters coming in her final throw, it wasn’t enough to secure a medal. Brazil’s Elizabeth Rodrigues Gomes claimed gold with a Paralympic record throw of 17.37 meters. Japan’s Keiko Onidani took silver with 15.78 meters, while Ukraine’s Zoia Ovsii won bronze with a season-best 14.17 meters.
On a brighter note, Deepthi Jeevanji excelled in the women’s 400m-T20 round 1, finishing first with a time of 55.45 seconds, and secured her place in the final scheduled for September 3. Ukraine’s Yuliia Shuliar and Brazil’s Antonia Keyla Da Silva Barros also qualified for the final with times of 56.49 seconds and 57.54 seconds, respectively. Earlier in the day, javelin thrower Sumit Antil made headlines by breaking his own Paralympic record twice to win gold in the men’s javelin throw F64 final. Antil’s impressive throws of 69.11 meters and 70.59 meters earned him the top spot.
Nitesh Kumar also added to India’s medal count with a gold in men’s singles SL3 para-badminton, and shooter Avani Lekhara won India’s first gold in the women’s 10m air rifle event.
