Dr. Nagalakshmi Choudhary, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW), has expressed concern that several educational institutions and women’s hostels in Karnataka have not implemented the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for student safety.

Following the murder of Neha at a Hubli college, letters were sent to all Deputy Commissioners urging the enforcement of safety protocols in institutions and hostels. After the recent rape incident in Kolkata, additional letters were dispatched to the Deputy Commissioners and the chief secretary of the state, hoping for the Chief Minister’s attention.

Five months ago, Deputy Commissioners met with heads of colleges and hostels to stress the importance of following safety protocols. Despite these efforts, many institutions have still not complied. Dr. Choudhary has now directed that institutions and hostels failing to implement the SOP be shut down. She emphasized that the protection of female students and women is a primary concern.

Dr. Choudhary also noted the increasing incidents of rape and violence against female students and highlighted the need for accountability. Local police officials are expected to ensure safety protocols are in place, while Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police will be held responsible for any incidents in their districts. An action report has been requested from district administrations to confirm that safety measures are being enforced in educational institutions, hostels, and PGs.
