Will remove AI-generated food images: Zomato CEO after complaints

New Delhi

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced on Sunday that the company will remove AI-generated images of food from its platform after receiving numerous complaints from customers. These AI images, meant to enhance the visual appeal of dishes, were found to be misleading, leading to a breach of trust between customers and restaurants, as well as increased refunds and lower ratings.

Goyal stated on social media platform X that while Zomato uses AI to improve efficiency in various areas, it does not support its use for dish images in restaurant menus. He urged restaurant partners to stop using AI-generated images and confirmed that Zomato would begin removing such images by the end of the month.

Last year, Zomato introduced PicNic AI (Picture Nicely AI) to help restaurants upgrade their food images. However, Goyal emphasized that the platform will now actively reject AI-generated dish images and encouraged restaurant owners to invest in genuine food photography.

Restaurant partners can request free food photography services from Zomato, as the company offers this at no cost to its partners. Goyal invited restaurant owners to contact Zomato’s catalogue support team to arrange a photoshoot. In related news, Zomato recently reported a 74% year-on-year revenue increase to Rs. 4,206 crore for Q1 FY25, and a significant 126% rise in net profit to Rs. 253 crore for the April-June quarter.
