The surgical super specialty building of Wenlock District Hospital will be inaugurated on August 15. The building was developed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited at a cost of Rs 56 crore. The state government provided Rs 2 crore, and KMC donated equipment valued at Rs 4 crore. Construction began in 2020.

The seven-storey building covers 1,65,000 square feet and includes 250 beds. Currently, four floors are completed. The ground floor will feature a cath lab, radiology section, 15-bed emergency treatment area, eight-bed emergency ICU, endoscopy facilities, and emergency operation theatres. The first floor will have 60 beds for ENT and urology operations. The second floor will include 70 beds for neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and ophthalmology surgery.

The third and fourth floors will each have five modular operation theatres, 10 beds for pre-surgery, and 15 beds for post-surgery care. District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao will inaugurate the building, with Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader, Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh, and MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath attending as guests.

Wenlock District Hospital, established in 1848, serves around 300,000 outpatients and 30,000 inpatients annually, performing about 10,000 surgeries each year. The new surgical block is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity for advanced surgeries, benefiting patients from Dakshina Kannada and neighboring districts.
