During Karnataka Legislative Council’s 153rd session at Vidhan Soudha on Tuesday, Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil reiterated the state’s commitment to proceed with the construction of Bengaluru’s second international airport. Patil clarified that Tamil Nadu’s announced plan to develop an airport in Hosur would not impact Karnataka’s decision.
We are proceeding as planned for the second international airport in Bengaluru, Patil affirmed, dismissing concerns over Tamil Nadu’s proposal. He highlighted that Karnataka’s initiative had been announced prior to Tamil Nadu’s decision, and both states are subject to exclusivity clauses regarding new airport developments.
Patil outlined the criteria for selecting the airport’s location, which is pending expert consultation and scheduled for discussion Today (Wednesday) through a two-phase meeting. Factors under consideration include technical suitability for flight operations, proximity to road and rail connectivity, convenience in terms of distance and travel time, and availability of contiguous land with minimal settlement.
The proposed airport is slated to be situated approximately 60 kilometers from Bengaluru, with essential linkage to the current Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The new facility aims to support future growth projections, accommodating up to 110 million passengers and handling 1.10 million tonnes of cargo.
