The government has allotted all available land, leaving no space for a graveyard, Minister Krishna Byre Gowda stated. He mentioned that 50 crores rupees have been spent on purchasing cemetery land over the past year.
In the Assembly on Monday, BJP MLA Harish requested land for an additional graveyard in his constituency. The minister responded that 10.9 acres of graveyard space already exists in the Harihara constituency, and a 9-acre plot has been identified for a new cemetery. Discussions with farmers about land acquisition have taken place.
However, the guidance price for the land is Rs 67 lakh, while Rs 1.20 crores is demanded for the existing land. The Tahsildar and Deputy Commissioner have been directed to purchase the identified land or find an alternative.
The minister expressed concern about the government’s current situation. He noted that all available land has been allocated, and there is now a need to purchase cemetery land from farmers. The government has spent Rs 50 crores on cemetery land in the past year.
The Principal Secretaries of the Revenue Department are dealing with daily court cases related to land allocation for cemeteries. Residents of nearby villages have requested space for graveyards. There is a challenge in balancing the need for graveyard space with the need for playgrounds for children.
