Following a fatal incident where a biker lost his life falling into a stormwater drain near Bangalore University, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated measures to barricade the drain with reinforced iron wire mesh. Hemant Kumar, a delivery agent, tragically fell into the drain near Jnanabharathi Junction on July 5 amid poor visibility during rainfall. His body was recovered after a 40-hour search operation.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath expressed condolences over the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He acknowledged that while the stormwater drain’s retaining wall was originally constructed to prevent such accidents, adjustments were needed following road paving.
Work to secure the drain with reinforced mesh and iron rods commenced promptly after the incident. The mesh now completely seals off access to the drain, with workers aiming to complete the project within a day or two, weather permitting.
Local residents, including Prashanth, an auto-driver familiar with the area, criticized BBMP’s delayed response, noting that preventive measures should have been taken earlier. He remarked, At least now the officials have taken up the work. There are many such risky spots across the city where low retaining walls pose dangers.
