Kapila river overflow causes flooding in Nanjangud, Dakshina Kashi
Deputy Commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy visited the Kabini dam on Wednesday due to heavy water discharge following recent rains in its Kerala catchment area. He also inspected the Nugu dam in H.D. Kote taluk, instructing officials on necessary precautions.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner directed officials to implement precautions in light of the Kabini dam’s significant water outflow. Residents along the Kapila river banks were advised to relocate to safer areas, emphasizing human and livestock safety.
Accompanied by Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan, ADC P. Shivaraju, and others, the Deputy Commissioner assessed flood impacts in Nanjangud, including the Bathing Ghat near Sri Nanjundeshwaraswamy Temple and nearby low-lying areas.
In Nanjangud, the deputy commissioner inspected flooded areas like Hallikeri and the 16-pillared mantap (Hadinaarukalu Mantap), directing local officials on effective management. Additional visits were made to Kadajatti village, Hullahalli, Hullahalli-Mysore Bridge, Bokkahalli, Kullaiahyanahundi, and the Kapila river bathing ghat. Precautionary measures were advised promptly, with discussions held with Halladakeri residents about essential amenities provided by the tahsildar.
Increased water discharge from the Kapila river flooded the Parasurama temple and Nanjundaswamy Temple’s Mudikatte bathing area in Nanjangud, Dakshina Kashi. Onlookers gathered near the temple’s bathing ghat to observe the river overflow, despite police warnings urging them to stay away. Ropes and barricades were set up at the Sixteen Kalu Mandapa near the Parasurama Temple to deter river access. The Municipal Council alerted Halladakeri residents to potential further river outflow rises and readied a temporary shelter for affected individuals.
