Rivers overflowing, kalasur bridge cum barrage collapsesĀ

Haveri

Heavy rain is currently affecting coastal and hilly regions, causing widespread flooding. Many rivers in the district have overflowed their banks. The bridge linking Kalasur and Haveri in Savanur taluk has been completely submerged. Consequently, access to several villages has been cut off, leaving them disconnected from district administration services.

Residents from numerous villages, including Haveri, Kalasur, and Thondur Hosalli, rely heavily on this bridge and barrage route. With the bridge submerged, they now face a detour of over 25 km through Karjagi to reach Haveri.

The Varada River has overflowed onto the Kalasur bridge, forcing villagers to cross it despite the dangerous conditions. Local farmers from villages like Devgiri are compelled to use the bridge to access their lands, often navigating through the water with oxen and carts.

This recurring issue during the rainy season has prompted villagers to repeatedly request the government to raise the barrage, but their appeals have gone unanswered. Villagers believe that raising the bridge will help manage water levels more effectively.

The situation is expected to persist until the rains diminish. Local residents are hopeful that once the bridge is raised, it will provide safer passage across the flooded areas.
