Bengaluru achieved a significant milestone with the trial run of South India’s inaugural double-decker flyover, aimed at addressing the city’s chronic traffic congestion. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar inaugurated the trial on Wednesday afternoon, marking a pivotal move in Bangalore’s efforts to alleviate traffic woes.

Speaking at the launch, Shivakumar highlighted the innovative nature of the double-decker flyover, constructed at a cost of Rs 450 crore under the Brand Bangalore initiative. Drawing inspiration from successful implementations observed during a visit to Nagpur, Shivakumar expressed confidence that this “world-class flyover” would effectively reduce traffic, transforming the congested Ragigudda-Silk Board junction into a signal-free corridor.

Spanning 3.36 km from Ragigudda to Silk Board Junction, the flyover integrates metro train tracks and vehicular lanes, a pioneering feature for Bangalore. The lower road accommodates vehicles while the elevated metro viaduct stands at 16 meters, ensuring seamless passage for metro trains.

Built by M/s Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the flyover includes strategically positioned ramps. Ramps A and C provide direct access to Hosur Road and HSR Layout respectively from Ragigudda, facilitating uninterrupted travel. Ramp B connects Outer Ring Road and Hosur Road from the BTM layout side, further enhancing connectivity options.

Phase one, covering the yellow metro line from Ragigudda to CSB Junction, has already been completed. Ramps A, B, and C were scheduled for commissioning in May, with Ramps D and E set to operationalize by December, bolstering the flyover’s functionality.
